Version 26.10.2

The tab bar is gone: your drafts and files now live in a sidebar.

Sidebar

  • A sidebar replaces the tab bar, in the style of macOS 26. Show or hide it with ⌃⌘S or the sidebar button in the toolbar.
  • Drafts: your untitled notes, each showing its first line as a preview.
  • Files: your open files, with the folder shown below the name, an icon for each file type, a dot for unsaved changes and a close button on hover.
  • Recent: up to 5 recently closed files, one click to reopen.
  • A filter field at the top searches by name and folder.
  • Drag to reorder files within a section.
  • Right-click a file for Close File, Close Other Files, Show in Finder and Copy Path.

Window & Toolbar

  • The window title now shows the file name, with its folder (or “Draft”) and “Edited” underneath.
  • A + button in the toolbar creates a new file; its menu has Open, Save and Save As.

Menus & Shortcuts

  • Menus now talk about files instead of tabs: Close Other Files, and in the Window menu Show Next File (⌃Tab), Show Previous File (⌃⇧Tab) and File 1…9.
  • ⌘1–⌘8 jump to a file and ⌘9 to the last one.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are unchanged and follow the sidebar order, drafts first.

Fixes & Improvements

  • Better syntax highlighting for JSON (the last item of a list, numbers in lists, true/false/null) and C# (async, await, try/catch and more).
  • Fixed the start of each line being hidden under the line numbers when reopening a file that was scrolled down.
  • Fixed the status bar showing the wrong line after reopening a file.

Everything else from 26.10.1 works as before, from encoding detection and Find & Replace to syntax highlighting and fast large-file editing.

Version 26.10.1

Everything that’s new in this release of NPad.

Tabs & Drafts

  • Tabs with persistent drafts: everything you type is restored after quitting NPad.
  • Open Recent menu to get back to the files you worked on.
  • Tab context menu with Close Other Tabs, Reveal in Finder and Copy Path.
  • The Dock menu lists your open tabs.

Files & Encodings

  • Automatic text-encoding detection for UTF-8, UTF-16, Windows-1252, ISO-8859-1 and Mac Roman.
  • Files are saved back in their original encoding.
  • Line endings are kept as they are: LF, CRLF or CR.
  • Detects when another app changes an open file: NPad reloads it, or asks you first if you have unsaved edits, and warns you before overwriting.
  • Drag a file onto the left half of the editor to insert its contents, or onto the right half to open it.

Editing

  • Find & Replace (⌘F).
  • Go to Line (⌘L), which also accepts line:column.
  • Edit → Transformations to change text to upper, lower or capitalized case.
  • Word wrap toggle and tab width setting.
  • Pasted text never carries formatting.

Code & Data

  • Syntax highlighting for JSON, XML and C#.
  • JSON and XML formatting from the Tools menu, with an error message when the input isn’t valid.
  • Auto-closing brackets and quotes in code files (can be turned off in Settings).

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • ⌘1–⌘9 to switch tabs, ⌃Tab / ⌃⇧Tab for the next / previous tab.
  • ⌘⇧D to duplicate the current line.
  • ⌘] / ⌘[ to indent / outdent.

Large Files

  • A 150,000-line, 7.7 MB log opens with about 30 ms of editor setup, and typing stays around 1 ms per keystroke, because NPad only lays out the part of the file you can see.
